My Asparagus garden in need of help! Help?

Growing asparagus is an exercise in patience.  This is the bed last year. Looks like it's going in the right direction. Unfortunately this is the bed this year.

Not sure what I did wrong. I joined a garden forum and I'm hoping someone can tell me if I can salvage this or I just have to start over. Three years! This is all that came up. Fudge.

  3. They are heavy feeders. I think they recommended manure for the beds, every year. You could keep what you have, and just add more crowns. Mine are Jersey-something. I don't put the manure on them anymore, but they do seem to be declining after 10 years. I did just score some chicken poop fertilizer, so maybe I'll try that.

Are there any old dead crowns in the ground there?

    1. I dug and found 2 and now I'm just using all the nice compost out of this bed for other projects and decided to start over the Asparagus bed somewhere else. Just not sure where yet. May end up somewhere in front yard! Then I'll have another bed back in the rotation!

  4. Well I finally had to know so i dug down and dug and dug and wow maybe the problem is the crowns are about 10-12 inches below the surface! And they flattened out and are down to the clay at the bottom of the box. Now I know that's not where they started but apparently that's what happened. So I guess I'll keep digging and dig them all out and see if any are viable and if not START OVER? Thinking about moving the site since clearly this didn't work so well.
